The ceremony, also called amal ka dastoor, is followed religiously by the Rajput, Bishnoi and Marwari communities around Udaipur and Jodhpur region by royal families, particularly during weddings and other important gatherings. “It is a communion that forges a bond between the one who offers the opium in his palm and those gathered." It is about respect and is a very intimate moment.

Opium a powerful drug which is taken from the seed of poppy,is produced in southern Rajasthan with government permission.

Traditionally when the farmers use to come back to their home after a days hard work they eat piece of opium or they drink opium because it lightened there tiredness and its a part of local culture. Also these people used to organize Opium Ceremony just like one during Marriage or any other Occasion. Villagers sit together in the courtyard of their houses and opium is diluted and churn with water and filtered in wooden bowls . Then Filtered opium is poured by one person in to palm and first he offer to "Shiva" and again he pours in to palm and offer to person who is sitting in the front or next to him , its repeated three times its called opium ceremony.
